TikTok's 48-hour DM rule: how to reply from a desktop
Answer TikTok DMs from a computer in a browser or an inbox tool. TikTok's 48-hour rule for business accounts, plus a daily routine that keeps you inside it.
By Demand Memo staff8 min read
You can answer TikTok DMs from a computer in two ways: on tiktok.com in a browser, or in a third-party inbox that runs on TikTok's Business Messaging API. Either way, a business can't message first, and the replies have to land inside TikTok's 48-hour window. BetterSocials is the pick for a small business that wants TikTok DMs in the same inbox as Instagram, Facebook and YouTube. Manychat fits a funnel built on message automations, and the TikTok website fits one person answering a few chats.
The short answer: a browser or an API inbox, inside 48 hours
TikTok's Business Messaging API is the rulebook every desktop tool works under, so this memo takes the rules explainer angle. We lay out the limits, the windows and the counts from TikTok's own pages, then say what we would do. The browser route has no setup. A tool needs a TikTok Business account, and it can only reply.
The 48-hour rule, in one line: after someone writes to your account, you have 48 hours to answer, and the number of messages you can send in that window is capped. Miss it and the conversation waits until they write again. For a business that sells through TikTok, the window is the deadline for every lead that arrives by DM.
Can I reply to TikTok DMs from a desktop app or tool?
TikTok lets you reply from a desktop in a browser: sign in on tiktok.com and open your messages. That route suits a creator or owner who handles a handful of chats a day and wants nothing new to learn.
The second route is a third-party inbox. These tools connect to TikTok's Business Messaging API, the official way an outside app reads and answers a business account's DMs. Manychat runs TikTok DM automation, with triggers for "User sends a message", "User clicks a link" and "User scans a QR code". Sprinklr and SleekFlow both publish help pages for answering TikTok business messages from their platforms. BetterSocials puts TikTok DMs in one inbox with Instagram and Facebook DMs and YouTube comments.
Pick by how many places your leads come from. If TikTok is your only DM source, the browser is enough. If buyers write to you on Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, one inbox saves you from checking three apps before every window closes.
What are TikTok's DM rules for business accounts, and how do I reply within them?
TikTok's Business Messaging API starts from one rule: "You are prohibited from initiating a conversation or messaging any TikTok user who has not started a conversation with you." Every tool, BetterSocials and Manychat included, is reply-only on TikTok for that reason. You answer people who wrote first.
The counts come from TikTok's messaging limits page, which applies them to conversations where you and the person don't follow each other. The table below sums up what TikTok allows at each point in a conversation.
| Situation | What TikTok allows |
|---|---|
| They send a first message | Up to 10 messages in 48 hours |
| They reply again | Unlimited messages for 48 hours |
| More than 48 hours pass | Three more messages at most |
| You write first | Not allowed |
TikTok's wording on the middle row is "Within 48 hours after each last reply from the TikTok user, the TikTok account can send an unlimited number of messages." So every reply from the buyer restarts your clock.
BetterSocials states its own cap more tightly: at most 10 replies within 48 hours of the person's last message. A reply there is text of up to 6,000 characters or one image, never both. We'd plan around the BetterSocials number, because a routine that fits 10 replies fits TikTok's rule too.
To reply within these rules, answer the first message the same day, keep the answer whole instead of splitting it into five short messages, and put the booking link or price in the first reply.
Which accounts and regions can use third-party TikTok DM tools?
TikTok's Business Messaging API is limited by account type and by region. On account type, TikTok's access page says the API "only supports TikTok Accounts with Advanced Access or Verified Business Accounts... Personal Accounts are not eligible." BetterSocials asks for a TikTok Business account.
Advanced Access comes from linking your TikTok account "to a TikTok for Business account or an unverified Business Center," per TikTok's entitlements page. On region, the same access page says "The Business Messaging API is not yet available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the UK market." For US accounts, developers must pass TikTok's data security reviews and agree to the USDS Addendum.
If your account is in the UK or Europe, no third-party tool can answer its TikTok DMs today. The browser and the TikTok app still work.
What about TikTok's built-in automatic messages?
TikTok's built-in automated messages come in four types: a welcome message, keyword replies, suggested questions and chat prompts. Per TikTok's auto message help page, you switch them on under Business suite, then Message center, in the app.
The limits are tight. Welcome messages max out at 250 characters. Keywords max out at 40 characters, and their replies at 500. Questions are capped at 80 characters and answers at 200. Every message goes through review, with a decision "within 1-5 business days," and any edit sends it back through review.
These messages are "only available to TikTok Account with Advanced Access and Verified Business Account (VBA)." They answer set keywords. A buyer's specific question still needs a person, or an AI reply written from your own facts, inside the 48-hour window.
TikTok Business Center adds a desktop route for teams. Once a Business Account is integrated with Business Center, you can give teammates permission to manage DMs under Assets, then TikTok accounts, then Assign new member. That integration requires a Verified Business Account.
A daily routine that keeps every DM inside 48 hours
BetterSocials, Manychat and the TikTok website all work under the same clock: an answer has to go out before the 48-hour window closes. We assume the DMs you care about are buyers asking about price, booking or availability. We also assume one person, often a founder, answers them.
What we would do:
- Switch the TikTok account to a Business account and connect it to your inbox, so DMs reach your computer.
- Block one time each day to clear the DM queue, so no first message ages past 24 hours.
- Write your prices, hours and booking link down once, so every reply carries the answer in a single message.
- Let AI draft the everyday replies in your voice, and approve the ones that touch money.
A team that reaches a DM within a day has a full day of slack before the window closes. A team that checks TikTok twice a week will lose leads to the clock.
How BetterSocials does this
BetterSocials brings TikTok comments and DMs into the same inbox as Instagram and Facebook comments and DMs and YouTube comments, across the six platforms it supports. Manychat, Sprinklr and SleekFlow also answer TikTok DMs. BetterSocials adds replies drafted in the owner's voice and a flat price with unlimited contacts.
AI replies have a DMs section with three settings: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice. On Draft for me, each new DM gets a draft the moment it arrives, and nothing sends until you approve it. On Reply in my voice, a DM gets an answer about a minute after it arrives. Questions wait in Needs reply unless you turn on Answer questions too, which needs at least one AI rule written first. After five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you. TikTok DM replies through apps only work for accounts outside the UK and Europe.
Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and one login. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts and unlimited teammates. Every plan has a 7-day free trial with a card.
Manychat bills by active contacts instead. Pro was $39 a month month-to-month, or $29 billed annually, with 2,500 active contacts, as of September 2026. Manychat Essential is cheaper, at $17 a month month-to-month or $14 billed annually, for 250 active contacts. A Pro account that reaches 4,000 people in a month pays $39 + 1,500 x $0.05 = $114. BetterSocials's trial and plans are on its pricing page.
FAQ
Can I reply to TikTok DMs in a desktop web browser?
Yes. Sign in on tiktok.com in a browser and open your messages to read and answer chats. A third-party inbox needs a TikTok Business account and the Business Messaging API.
Can a TikTok business account send the first DM?
No. TikTok's API docs say: "You are prohibited from initiating a conversation or messaging any TikTok user who has not started a conversation with you." Every tool on the API is reply-only on TikTok, BetterSocials included.
How many TikTok DM replies can a business send in 48 hours?
TikTok allows up to 10 messages in the 48 hours after a person's first message. Each reply from them opens a new 48-hour window, and after 48 hours you get three more messages at most. BetterSocials sends up to 10 replies within 48 hours of the person's last message.
Which third-party tools can reply to TikTok DMs from a desktop?
Tools on TikTok's Business Messaging API can, including Manychat, Sprinklr, SleekFlow and BetterSocials. Each needs a TikTok Business account outside the EEA, Switzerland and the UK. BetterSocials adds Instagram, Facebook and YouTube to the same inbox, from $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts.
Why can't I connect my TikTok DMs to a tool in the UK or Europe?
TikTok says: "The Business Messaging API is not yet available in the European Economic Area, Switzerland or the UK market." Every third-party tool depends on that API. Accounts there can still answer DMs in the TikTok app or a browser.
Can a TikTok comment trigger an automatic DM?
Not on BetterSocials or any other tool outside TikTok's limited rollout in Vietnam, Thailand and Indonesia. On TikTok, a keyword in a comment gets a public reply with your link instead. Instagram and Facebook are where a keyword comment sends a private DM.
Do I need a Business account to answer TikTok DMs in a tool?
Yes. TikTok's API supports "TikTok Accounts with Advanced Access or Verified Business Accounts," and personal accounts are not eligible. To get Advanced Access, link your TikTok account to a TikTok for Business account or an unverified Business Center.
