What a chatbot, a scheduler and an AI manager cost a small business in 2026
A chatbot answers DMs, a scheduler publishes posts, an AI manager handles the replies too. Compare 2026 prices for Buffer, Later, Metricool and more.
By Demand Memo staff9 min read
The best AI tool for a small business's social media depends on where your customers reach you. If customers ask about prices and bookings in comments and DMs, an AI social media manager such as BetterSocials is the pick, from $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, for four accounts. If you mostly post, a scheduler like Buffer is the cheaper route, at $5 a channel a month on annual billing as of October 2026.
A chatbot such as ManyChat suits a business where one keyword brings in most of the DMs. This memo prices all three for a small business running four to six accounts, with every figure dated and sourced.
Three kinds of AI tool, and the question this memo prices
BetterSocials, Buffer and ManyChat are one example each of the three kinds of tool a small business buys for social media. This memo takes the cost question: what each kind costs you at four and six accounts, and what the extra money gets you.
A chatbot sends DM replies from flows or templates you set up in advance. An AI scheduler publishes your posts on a schedule you set. An AI social media manager publishes your posts too, then drafts the comment and DM replies in your voice.
If your customers write in comments and DMs, choose the tool for the replies first and add the rest after.
Answering by hand in the free apps costs nothing but time, and Instagram limits the time you have: a business can only reply to a DM within 24 hours of the person's last message. After that, the conversation stays closed until they write again.
Our assumptions: you're one person with one login, you run four to six accounts, and your customers ask about price and booking. Every price below is the one listed in October 2026, with its billing period.
The 2026 price sheet for AI social media tools
Buffer costs less than BetterSocials at both four and six accounts, and Meta Business Suite costs nothing. The table shows each tool's entry price for its inbox or core plan as seen in October 2026, how it's billed, and what its reply side covers.
| Tool | Kind | Entry price | Billing | Reply side |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| BetterSocials | AI manager | $29 a month, Creator | Monthly, or $24 yearly | Comments on six, DMs on three |
| Buffer | Scheduler | $5 a channel a month | Annual | Comments only |
| Metricool | Scheduler | $25 a month, Starter | Monthly, or $20 annual | Inbox from the Free plan |
| Later | Scheduler | $37.50 a month, Growth | Annual | No YouTube or LinkedIn conversations |
| Hootsuite | Team suite | $99 a user a month, Standard | Annual | Inbox without YouTube |
| Sprout Social | Team suite | $199 a seat a month, Standard | Annual | Inbox on Standard |
| ManyChat | Chatbot | $39 a month, Pro | Monthly | Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp, TikTok |
| Meta Business Suite | Native tool | $0 | Free | Facebook, Messenger, Instagram, WhatsApp |
At four accounts, Buffer is cheaper: four channels come to $20 a month on annual billing, against BetterSocials Creator at $24 a month billed yearly, or $29 billed monthly. At six, Buffer runs $30 a month on annual billing and BetterSocials Pro $39 a month billed yearly, or $49 billed monthly. The extra money buys the DM side of the inbox, AI replies in your voice and keyword comment-to-DM, where a keyword in a comment sends that person a DM with your link.
Hootsuite and Sprout Social price per user, and Metricool prices per brand, with five brands on Starter. ManyChat prices by contact, which the chatbot section works through.
BetterSocials: how an AI manager handles comments, DMs and posts
BetterSocials is the AI social media manager for a small business whose leads arrive in comments and DMs. It puts comments from six platforms into one inbox: Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages. It posts and schedules to all six as well. DMs come in from Instagram, Facebook and TikTok, while the other three are comments and public replies.
You write AI rules, plain sentences that hold your prices, hours and booking link, and every draft answers from them. AI comment replies have three settings under Settings, then AI voice. Off means you write every reply, and AI assist drafts one when you click it.
Draft for me drafts a reply to each new comment and posts nothing until you approve it, one at a time or with Approve in bulk. Reply in my voice sends everyday replies on its own. Questions wait in Needs reply unless you turn on Answer questions too, which needs at least one AI rule first.
DMs have the same three settings in their own section, so Instagram, Facebook and TikTok DMs get drafts or answers in your voice too. A keyword comment sends a DM with your link on Instagram and Facebook, and on TikTok, YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages it posts a public reply with the link.
Lead tagging is free and on by default. A comment or DM asking about price, booking or availability gets a Lead tag and a push notification to your phone.
Buffer and Metricool also read YouTube comments, and Later, Hootsuite and Sprout Social read TikTok comments. What BetterSocials adds at its price is having all of it in one inbox: comments, DMs, keyword comment-to-DM and replies drafted in your voice, with nothing billed per contact.
Creator is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, for four accounts, one login and 1,000 AI credits a month. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts and 2,000 credits. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for 12 accounts and unlimited teammates.
AI credits meter the AI's writing only: a draft costs one credit, and when they run out the AI pauses rather than charging more. Every plan has a 7-day free trial, with a card required.
Buffer's per-channel bill at four and six channels
Buffer charges $5 a channel a month on annual billing, as of October 2026, so the bill grows with each account you add. Four channels cost 4 x $5 = $20 a month. Six channels on Buffer Essentials cost 6 x $5 = $30 a month.
Buffer's inbox covers comments only, so Instagram and Facebook DMs stay in the phone app. That means the DM asking about price sits on your phone while Instagram's 24-hour clock runs.
Pick Buffer if you mostly post and answer a few comments by hand. For that job it's the better buy, and it costs less than BetterSocials at every account count here.
Metricool's plans, from free to Advanced
Metricool has a free plan for one brand with up to 20 scheduled posts a month, per Metricool's pricing page as of October 2026. Starter is from $25 a month billed monthly, or from $20 a month on annual billing, for five brands. Advanced is from $67 a month, or $53 a month on annual billing.
Metricool's inbox starts on the free plan, and LinkedIn joins it on Starter. Metricool also reads YouTube comments, as Buffer does.
For AI, Metricool runs an MCP server, a connector that lets an assistant such as Claude work inside your account, on every plan including Free. Its limits page says inbox messages and post comments aren't available through that connector, so the assistant works on your posts and analytics. Pick Metricool if you want a scheduler with an inbox on a free or low-cost plan and don't need keyword automation.
Later's Conversations inbox and where it stops
Later's Conversations inbox starts on the Growth plan at $37.50 a month billed yearly, as of October 2026. It has no YouTube or LinkedIn conversations. Later does read TikTok comments, as Hootsuite and Sprout Social do.
Pick Later if YouTube and LinkedIn aren't where your customers write to you.
Design apps and team suites: Canva, Hootsuite and Sprout Social
Canva handles the design step. Choose the reply tool first and add the design app after, because a graphic doesn't answer the customer asking about price.
Hootsuite includes its inbox from Standard at $99 per user a month billed annually, as of October 2026. Its inbox doesn't list YouTube, so YouTube stays publishing and analytics only. Sprout Social puts its inbox on Standard at $199 per seat a month billed annually.
Both price per seat, which suits a team better than a single owner. For comparison, BetterSocials Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for 12 accounts and unlimited teammates.
When a chatbot is the right AI tool
ManyChat is the chatbot we priced, and its bill grows with your audience. Pro is $39 a month billed monthly with 2,500 active contacts, as of October 2026, and each contact past that costs $0.05 on Pro. A Pro account that reaches 4,000 active contacts in a month pays the $39 plus $0.05 for every contact past 2,500, which takes the bill over a hundred dollars. That's the number to watch in the month a post does well.
ManyChat works on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok, and it doesn't post for you. BetterSocials bills nothing per contact, so Creator stays $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts at any audience size.
Meta Business Suite is free on desktop and in its mobile app, per Meta's help center. Its keyword automations send templates you write or run Meta Business Agent, are set up on desktop, and wait 15 minutes before sending unless you reply first.
A chatbot fits when one keyword brings in most of your DMs and you're happy to build flows. A template answers the questions you wrote it for. The comment asking about price or availability in words you didn't predict still waits for you.
What we would do
If customers ask about price and booking in comments and DMs across several platforms, we'd start the BetterSocials trial on Creator. We'd write the AI rules first and run Draft for me through the 7-day trial before trusting Reply in my voice.
We'd put a four-account business whose customers mostly read its posts on Buffer, at $20 a month on annual billing, and answer comments by hand. If one keyword drives most of your DMs on Instagram and Facebook, we'd try Meta Business Suite's free keyword automations before paying for ManyChat.

Yes, inside Instagram's rules.
