Can ChatGPT run a business Instagram account in 2026?
ChatGPT writes captions and drafts replies, but it can't see your Instagram inbox alone. What a connector adds, what Meta allows and what it costs in 2026.

ChatGPT can write your Instagram captions and draft replies to comments and DMs, but it can't read or answer your Instagram inbox until a tool connects the two. For a business that wants comments and DMs answered in its own voice from one inbox, BetterSocials is the best fit. Composio suits a team building its own setup, and Meta Business Suite covers free keyword templates.
The short answer: captions yes, your inbox through a tool
BetterSocials, Composio and Upload-Post all host connectors that let an AI assistant reach Instagram, and the rules around those connectors decide what ChatGPT can do. We take the rules view here: the limits, the windows and the counts, with the month we saw each one. A connector is a link that lets an assistant use another app's tools, and all three run on MCP, the Model Context Protocol, an open standard for that link.
The table below compares ChatGPT and Claude connected through BetterSocials's hosted connector, as of October 2026.
| Job | ChatGPT alone | ChatGPT connected | Claude connected |
|---|---|---|---|
| Write captions | Yes | Yes | Yes |
| Read comments and DMs | No | Yes | Yes |
| Draft replies | From text you paste | Yes, from the thread | Yes, from the thread |
| Send replies | No | Business, Enterprise or Edu only | Yes, on your instruction |
The gap sits in the last row. In a normal ChatGPT chat, the connected tools are read-only, because OpenAI reserves write actions from custom connectors for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. Claude runs the full set.
How can I use ChatGPT for my business Instagram, including captions, comments and DMs?
ChatGPT does its best Instagram work on captions, where you give it the post and it gives you words. Tell it your business type, who the post is for, your tone and what the post should get people to do. Paste a few captions you liked so it has your voice to copy.
Comments and DMs are where the copy-and-paste routine breaks. Each reply means opening Instagram, copying the question, pasting it into ChatGPT, adding your prices or hours, then pasting the answer back. That works for a handful a day and stops working when a post takes off.
A connected inbox takes over at that point. BetterSocials pulls Instagram comments and DMs into one inbox, and its AI drafts each reply in your voice from a profile built from your past replies. You write AI rules, plain sentences such as "never quote prices, send people to the booking link", and every draft follows them.
Captions can move into the same place. BetterSocials writes captions from a video's transcript and schedules posts to Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, TikTok and LinkedIn from one place.
Can I connect ChatGPT or Claude to my social media inbox to reply to comments and DMs?
Claude and ChatGPT both connect to a social inbox through a custom connector, and the setup differs by assistant. Claude allows custom connectors on Free (one connector), Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, per Anthropic's help center as of October 2026. On Team and Enterprise, an Owner adds them.
ChatGPT needs Developer mode, which takes a paid plan and works on the web only. With BetterSocials, you paste its connector address as the server URL, leave authentication on OAuth and sign in with your normal BetterSocials login. No API key is involved.
Once connected, the two assistants behave differently. Claude can read the inbox, draft and send replies in your voice, create and schedule posts, manage keywords and read analytics. A normal ChatGPT chat gets the read tools, so it reads the inbox and drafts, and it can't send a reply or publish a post.
Other connectors exist. Composio's Instagram toolkit lists 32 tools, including publishing, replying to comments and sending DMs. Its Hobby plan is $0 for 100,000 tool calls a month and Pro is $29 a month, as of October 2026.
Composio is a developer platform, so it fits a team that wants to build its own setup. Upload-Post is a reviewed app in ChatGPT's app directory and lists tools for comments and DMs. Every send from an assistant through BetterSocials happens on your instruction and goes through the same limits as the app.
Can I draft DM replies to interested buyers using ChatGPT or Claude automatically?
BetterSocials does the automatic part inside the inbox, so no assistant has to watch for new messages. Its AI replies have two sections, Comments and DMs, and each has three settings: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice.
Draft for me writes a draft in your voice the moment a comment or DM arrives, and nothing posts until you approve it. Reply in my voice answers everyday comments under the comment 1 to 5 minutes later, and a DM gets an answer about a minute after it arrives. The DM side covers Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.
Buyer questions get a safety step. They wait in Needs reply for your approval unless you turn on Answer questions too, and that switch only turns on once you've written at least one AI rule. When your rules don't cover what someone asked, such as a size or an order detail, the AI doesn't guess and the DM waits for you.
A few limits apply. After five AI replies in one conversation in a day, the rest wait for you. Story replies and voice notes get no AI reply, and each AI reply or draft uses 1 AI credit.
ChatGPT and Claude can still sit in the loop. Through the connector, either one reads the same inbox and drafts, and Claude can also send on your word.
What does Instagram's API let any AI tool send?
Meta's Instagram Messaging API sets the same limits for ChatGPT, Claude and every inbox tool, because they all send through it. A tool can reply to a DM only within 24 hours of the person's last message, and each new message restarts the clock. After that, Meta rejects the send, though you can still reply in the Instagram app, which has no window.
Comment-to-DM, where a comment triggers a private message, has its own rule. Meta's private replies documentation says "Only one message can be sent to the Instagram user who commented. The message must be sent within 7 days from when the comment was created." The conversation continues only if the person answers, and then the 24-hour window applies.
Where that message lands depends on the person. Meta's docs say it goes "to the Instagram user's Inbox folder, if the Instagram user follows the Instagram professional account, or to the Instagram user's Request folder, if the Instagram user does not follow the account."
The practical rule is speed. A buyer's question that waits a day loses its window for every tool.
What does it cost to have AI answer Instagram comments and DMs?
Meta Business Suite is the cheapest option, at $0. Meta's help center says "Meta Business Suite is free to use on desktop and in the Meta Business Suite mobile app," as of October 2026. Its keyword automations send templates you write or Meta Business Agent, are set up on desktop and wait 15 minutes before sending unless you reply first.
Manychat charges by contact. Pro is $39 a month with 2,500 active contacts, billed monthly, and each extra contact costs $0.05, as of October 2026. A Pro account that reaches 4,000 people in a month pays the $39 plan price plus 1,500 extra contacts at $0.05 each, close to three times the plan price.
BetterSocials charges by account instead. Creator is $29 a month, or $24 a month billed yearly, for four social accounts and one login, with unlimited contacts and 1,000 AI credits a month. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts, and Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for 12 accounts and unlimited teammates.
Meta's tool is cheaper than both. What BetterSocials's $29 buys is AI drafts in your voice, one inbox for comments and DMs across its supported platforms, and a connector for Claude and ChatGPT. Our assumption is that a business getting a few comments a week can stay on Meta's free templates.
How BetterSocials does this
BetterSocials puts Instagram comments and DMs in one inbox, with Needs reply and Replied views, tags and leads. Every new comment and DM gets a tag on arrival, and Lead marks someone asking about price, booking or availability. A new lead sends a push notification to the owner's phone.
Setup takes three steps. Connect the Instagram account from Connected Accounts. Write your prices, hours and booking link as AI rules, then approve drafts until they read like you and switch DMs to Reply in my voice.
The hosted connector lets Claude and ChatGPT reach that inbox with the normal login. Every plan has a 7-day free trial with a card required, and plans start at $29 a month for four accounts. BetterSocials's pricing page has the trial, and its developers page explains the connector.
What we would do: keep ChatGPT for captions, move comments and DMs into an inbox that drafts in your voice, and run DMs on Draft for me until you trust the drafts.
FAQ
How do I connect ChatGPT to my Instagram comments and DMs?
Add a connector in ChatGPT's Developer mode, which needs a paid plan on the web. With BetterSocials, you paste its connector address as the server URL and sign in with OAuth, with no API key. Composio and Upload-Post offer connectors too. In a normal chat, ChatGPT reads the inbox and drafts replies through BetterSocials.
Can Claude reply to Instagram comments and DMs?
Yes, through a custom connector. Claude allows custom connectors on Free (one connector), Pro, Max, Team and Enterprise, and on Team and Enterprise an Owner adds them. Connected to BetterSocials, Claude can read the inbox, draft and send replies in your voice, and schedule posts, and every send happens only when you tell it to.
Can ChatGPT send Instagram DMs for me?
In a normal ChatGPT chat connected to BetterSocials, no. ChatGPT runs the read tools and drafts, and OpenAI reserves write actions from custom connectors for Business, Enterprise and Edu workspaces. To have DMs answered without you, BetterSocials's Reply in my voice setting answers a DM about a minute after it arrives.
How long do I have to reply to an Instagram DM through a tool?
You have 24 hours from the person's last message. After that, Meta rejects the send from any tool, and every new message from them restarts the clock. You can still reply in the Instagram app, which has no window, and a private reply to a comment is one message sent within 7 days of the comment.
Does ChatGPT write good Instagram captions for a business?
ChatGPT writes better captions when you give it your business type, your audience, your tone and the post's goal. BetterSocials drafts captions from your video's transcript in your voice. It then schedules the post to Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, Threads, TikTok and LinkedIn from one place.
Is there a free way to auto-reply to Instagram comments with a DM?
Yes. Meta Business Suite's keyword automation sends a template you write when a comment matches your keywords. Setup is desktop only, and it waits 15 minutes before sending unless you reply first. BetterSocials starts at $29 a month for four accounts and drafts replies in your voice.
