How to clear a YouTube comment backlog with AI

Clear a pile of unanswered YouTube comments with AI: answer questions first, approve drafts in your voice, then keep new comments from piling up again.

By Demand Memo staff8 min read

To clear a backlog of unanswered YouTube comments with AI, connect the channel to an inbox that drafts replies in your voice, answer the questions first, and approve the rest in batches. BetterSocials is best for owners whose YouTube comments sit beside Instagram and Facebook DMs. CommentShark is best when you answer YouTube comments and nothing else. In either tool, switch on drafts for new comments first, so the pile stops growing while you clear it.

What it takes to clear a comment backlog

BetterSocials, CommentShark and YouTube Studio can all post a reply under a YouTube comment, so the tool is the smaller decision. The bigger one is the order you work in. A comment backlog is every comment on your videos that nobody has answered, and buyer questions can sit inside a long run of compliments.

We took the how-to angle for this memo: numbered steps, what is known with its source, and what we'd do. Our assumption is that you run marketing yourself or with a small team, and that some of your YouTube comments come from people who could buy.

The method has three parts. Stop new comments from adding to the pile. Answer the questions that could turn into customers. Then clear the rest in batches, with AI drafts you approve.

How can I reply to all the unanswered comments on my YouTube videos with AI?

BetterSocials handles this in five steps, and the order carries over to other tools that draft replies for you.

1. Connect the channel

In BetterSocials, you start at Connected Accounts in the sidebar. You sign in on YouTube's own screen and land back with the channel listed. It takes under a minute, and your password never touches BetterSocials.

2. Give the AI your facts and your voice

Open Settings, then AI voice. Paste a handful of replies you've written into the Your voice box, and put prices, links and delivery times in Rules just above it. AI rules are plain sentences you write, such as "never quote prices, send people to the booking link."

3. Stop the pile from growing

Set AI replies for comments to Draft for me. Every new comment then gets a draft in your voice the moment it arrives, and nothing posts until you approve it. Comment drafts go out one at a time from Needs reply, or in a batch with Approve in bulk.

4. Answer the backlog's questions first

BetterSocials doesn't promise to catch every comment on every old video. Back-catalog comments land in the Inbox for you to answer, and AI assist writes a draft in your voice when you click it. Work through questions about price, links and availability before the compliments, because those are the comments that can turn into a sale.

5. Budget the AI credits

Each AI reply or draft in BetterSocials uses 1 AI credit. Creator includes 1,000 AI credits a month and Pro includes 2,000. When the credits run out, the AI pauses and never charges more on its own. A backlog larger than your monthly credits clears over two months, or you type the short thank-yous yourself.

What is the best tool to reply to YouTube comments at scale?

BetterSocials is our pick when YouTube is one of several platforms that bring you buyers, and CommentShark is our pick when you answer YouTube alone. The table compares five tools on this job. Prices are as of the month each was checked: CommentShark in September 2026, Metricool in August 2026, and BetterSocials, Buffer and Hootsuite in October 2026.

ToolBest forYouTube repliesVoice-trained AIStarting price
BetterSocialsYouTube plus Instagram and Facebook DMsInbox, AI drafts, keyword repliesYes, from your past replies$29 a month, four accounts
CommentSharkYouTube-only channelsAI replies with an approval queueYes, from your past repliesFree for 20 actions a month
BufferScheduling with a comments inboxComments in its Community inboxNot listed$30 a month, six channels, yearly
MetricoolReading YouTube comments for freeComments, free tier includedNot listedFree tier
HootsuiteTeams that pay per userNot in its inboxNot listed$99 per user, billed yearly

CommentShark is cheaper if YouTube is your one platform. Its free plan covers 20 actions a month with template replies, AI starts on Starter at $19, and Creator is $49 and Pro $139. Its AI replies are trained on your past replies, with an approval queue.

Buffer is cheaper at matching account counts. Six channels on Buffer Essentials are $30 a month on annual billing, against BetterSocials Pro at $39 a month billed yearly for six accounts. The difference buys the DM side of the inbox, because Buffer's Community inbox covers comments and no DMs. BetterSocials adds AI replies in your voice and keyword replies at that price.

Metricool reads YouTube comments on its free tier, which makes it a free way to see them in one place. Hootsuite's inbox starts on Standard at $99 per user a month, billed annually, and as of July 2026 that inbox did not include YouTube comments.

BetterSocials does this with a keyword reply, and on YouTube the link goes out in a public reply under the comment. YouTube has no direct message API for any tool, so no tool can send a YouTube commenter a private message. Manychat works on Instagram, Messenger, WhatsApp and TikTok. BetterSocials runs keyword replies on YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages as well as Instagram, Facebook and TikTok.

Setup in BetterSocials is one screen. Go to Comment to DM and hit New keyword link. There are five fields: the accounts it runs on, the word to watch for, the public reply, the message with your link, and a switch to let AI write each reply fresh. Capitals don't matter. Hit Go live and it's running.

On YouTube, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages, the message posts as the reply under the comment and the link goes there. Instagram and Facebook get both halves: a public reply and a DM with the link. Keywords are unlimited on every plan.

For a demand team, the useful part is measurement. A UTM tag is a label added to a link that tells your analytics where a click came from. BetterSocials can add UTM tags to every keyword link, sent as a DM or as a public reply, from Settings, then Link tracking. It's off by default, and replies you type by hand are never tagged.

What the YouTube Data API lets a tool do with comments

The YouTube Data API is Google's official interface for reading and answering comments on a channel. Google documents the comment calls on its Implementation: Comments page.

Composio, a developer platform, shows what the API exposes. Its YouTube toolkit has 57 tools, including ones to list comment threads, insert a comment reply, upload a video and read YouTube Analytics. As of October 2026, Composio's Hobby plan is $0 for 100,000 tool calls a month, and Pro is $29 a month plus $0.0003 per call over the allowance.

The API has no private messages. That's why BetterSocials, CommentShark and every other tool answer YouTube comments with public replies. A team with a developer can wire the API to a model directly. Our assumption is that most small teams would rather pay for the inbox, the voice profile and the approval queue than build them.

What YouTube Studio does on its own

YouTube Studio is YouTube's own dashboard for your channel, where you can read and reply to comments by hand. Each reply there is one you write and send yourself. Our assumption is that for a backlog of a few dozen comments, that's enough, and it costs nothing.

It gets slow once the backlog runs into the hundreds. Meta's free Inbox Automations don't help here: they handle keyword comment-to-message on Facebook and Instagram, and nothing in Meta's Inbox Automations pages covers YouTube. So the free route on YouTube is replying by hand, one comment at a time.

How BetterSocials does this

BetterSocials puts YouTube comments in one Inbox with Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, Threads and LinkedIn Company Pages, with views for Needs reply and Replied. AI replies have three settings for comments: Off, Draft for me and Reply in my voice.

Reply in my voice answers everyday comments, such as compliments and feedback, 1 to 5 minutes after they land. Questions wait in Needs reply unless you turn on Answer questions too, which only switches on once you've written at least one AI rule. When your rules don't cover what someone asked, the AI doesn't guess, and the comment waits for you. Every AI reply passes a filter for banned phrases and length before it can send, and spam is skipped.

Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts, one login and 1,000 AI credits. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, for six accounts and 2,000 credits. Team is $99 a month, or $79 billed yearly, for twelve accounts, unlimited teammates and 4,000 shared credits. Every plan has a 7-day free trial with a card, unlimited comments and unlimited contacts.

What we'd do: turn on Draft for me for comments the day you connect, and approve the new drafts in bulk each morning. Spend the first sessions on backlog questions with AI assist. Switch on Reply in my voice for everyday comments once the drafts read like you.

FAQ

Can AI reply to YouTube comments in my own voice?

Yes. BetterSocials builds a voice profile from replies you've written and drafts each new reply to match. You approve and send, edit first, or let it answer everyday comments on its own. CommentShark also trains its AI on your past replies, for YouTube only.

Can a tool send DMs to people who comment on YouTube?

No tool can, because YouTube has no direct message API. On YouTube, BetterSocials works with comments and public replies, and a keyword reply posts your link under the comment. For comment-to-DM with a link, Instagram and Facebook are the platforms where the DM goes out.

Will AI answer comments on my old videos automatically?

Not in BetterSocials. Back-catalog comments land in the Inbox for you to answer, and AI assist writes a draft in your voice when you click it. Draft for me and automatic replies cover comments that arrive after you switch them on, so the backlog stops growing while you clear it.

How much does it cost to clear a YouTube comment backlog with BetterSocials?

BetterSocials Creator is $29 a month, or $24 billed yearly, for four accounts and 1,000 AI credits a month. Each AI reply or draft uses 1 credit, so 1,000 drafted replies fit in one month. Pro is $49 a month, or $39 billed yearly, with 2,000 credits for six accounts.

What happens when the AI runs out of credits?

BetterSocials pauses the AI and never charges more on its own. Comments keep landing in the Inbox, and you can answer them yourself until the credits reset the next month. Unlimited comments and contacts come with every plan, so a busy month costs the same as a quiet one.
